More than 123,188 people have died. Many are still missing.
Families are broken up, homes are destroyed and thousands are homeless.
For each that passed away, many more family members, relatives and friends are struggling to cope with the death and loss of their loved ones.
This New Year, millions of people in this region are living in grief.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami which struck the Indian Ocean region.
